Calculating Access Road Mats

For vehicle access you don't pave the full width — you lay rows of mats as wheel tracks. A single vehicle runs on two rows spread with roughly a 50cm gap down the middle (the vehicle straddles the gap), so a standard one-vehicle road is 2 mats wide.

To estimate the number of mats:

1. Measure the total road length in metres
2. Choose how many mat rows (lanes) you need across — 1 for foot traffic, 2 for a single vehicle, 4 for two-way traffic
3. Divide the length by 2.4 and round up to get the rows along the length
4. Multiply by the number of lanes

Example: A 50m single-vehicle (2-lane) access road:

• Along the length: 50 / 2.4 = 21 mats
• Lanes across: 2
• Total: 21 x 2 = 42 mats

We divide by 2.4 rather than the mat's exact 2.44m so the count always rounds up — you'll never come up short on site.

Calculating Laydown Areas

Laydown bays and crane pads are matted as a full rectangle. For each bay, divide the length by 2.4 and the width by 1.2, round both up, then multiply them together. Multiply that by the number of bays you need.

Tips for Accurate Estimates

• Add 5-10% buffer for curves, turns, and irregular shapes
• Consider turnaround areas at dead ends
• Account for gate entries where you need wider coverage
• Plan for equipment pads near work zones
